Why we Leave Tails?

This answer should be as easy as “because they are born with them.“ Dogs use tails to communicate to humans, other dogs & other animals. My wife and I grew up like most of you in the United States seeing every Rottweiler with a cropped tail. So only witnessing Rottweilers with cropped tails from friends, family, strangers and Rottweilers on television ( It's a form of Conditioning ). All this became the "normal" for the rottweilers here in the United States. Cropping the tail is ONLY COSMETIC NOW, JUST FOR LOOKS. When the rottweiler was bred originally it had the tail cropped for working purposes. ( pulling carts etc..) This was done to prevent injury to the dog’s tail during their work. Now that work is no longer preformed, mainly to the development of trains and modern vehicles. With no need to pull carts anymore the numbers of rottweilers dropped dramatically and almost all the rottweilers were lost. Their job shifted to security mainly during WWI & WWII. Security being a natural trait dating back to the Rottweilers creation. Protecting herds of live stock, owner’s money with money belts around their neck and protecting owners/families. So the Rottweiler switching jobs to security during the war is what helped save this breed from extinction. Fast forward to today and the USA is the only country left that crops a Rottweilers tail. This procedure is usually done within 3 days of birth with no anesthesia. The procedure can cause medical issues for the puppies. Cutting into nerves, ligaments, tendons and can cause infections and other medical complications. All this for a Cosmetic look. We help create these wonderful dogs, help raise them from birth until they go home with a new family or they live here with us. We want the best for our dogs for their entire lifetime. We cannot with good conscience let this continue here at Rottie Squad Kennel. We have personally helped deliver puppies, bottle feed, manually help puppies urinate and bowel movements, we have gone to the ends of the earth to care for a sick puppy. They have put their trust in us and we will no longer sit in a veterinarian waiting room office and hear our puppies screaming in the next room during the docking tail procedure. It doesn’t stop there as well. They get stitches and then sent home bleeding for a period of time. All  this so they can have a different look other than what they were born with.  For these reasons and others we will no longer put any of our puppies through that process again. We hope people will start to understand why we have chosen this path for our rottweilers. We are strong in our beliefs on this matter and will not wavier in our decision.

SO PLEASE DON’T ASK US TO CROP A TAIL, THE ANSWER WILL ALWAYS BE NO!!.

Best Regards,
